Jeff Garner is native Northern Californian. Jeff has a B.A. in Theology, received his M.A. in Exegetical Theology from Western Seminary and his Doctorate of Ministry from Gordon-Conwell (2003). Jeff and Julie (wife) have been married for 16 years. They have a girl, Jerusalem and a boy, Jedidiah.

Jeff has pastored San Francisco Lighthouse since 2003. Before serving our San Francisco community Jeff served as Vice-President for Christian Life College, where he lectured as Professor of Spiritual Formation. He served as adjunct professor of Preaching at Urshan Graduate School of Theology (2002-2005). Currently he lectures at Western Seminary as adjuct faculty (Growing Disciples Intentionally and Urban Mission, 2005-present).

Jeff tutors Jerusalem and coahces Jed. Takes his wife out on dates to hole-in-the-wall San Francisco restaurants, and sabbaths his Saturdays hiking through the Pacific Coastal Trails, reading in cafes and creating new forms of art.

Jeff’s autoresume:

I have been sprayed by a skunk 2 times, different occasions and I think different skunks, although both had a white stripes down their backs and tails that stuck up like Alfalfa.

I have visited 4 of the worlds continents: got a heat stroke on the Philippines and passed out, a massive and fatale car pileup in Poland, where I was the second car, been to Ethiopia’s Awara plains twice and saw a paranormal wind, stranded on Maui when our airlines went bankrupt, snuck into the Olive Grove at Gethsemane, had dysentery in Mexico City, got the flu while on a cattle drive from Idaho to Nevada, met my brown-eyed sweetheart at a library, we were married a year later.

I have lived in the Sierra Wilderness in complete isolation from anyone for 6 weeks while I was on a spiritual retreat. I didn’t talk to another human being or see another human being the whole time and I got some cool stories to share with grandkids should i ever have any.

My wife and two children live downtown San Francisco, in an old synagogue, built in 1910. We hike 70 steps 7-8 times a day with groceries and all. I can watch the moon crest the Transamerica Building from my living room.

I have three childhood friends; all of us are full-time ministers. We are still the best of friends. Friday nights I share with my Beloved Community stories and games.

My Bucket List Includes: Sabbatical to Israel when I turn 40 where I spend 40 days in a monastery; hang-gliding over the California coastal cliffs; kite surfing under the golden gate bridge; going to a super bowl where the 49ers play and win; hearing U2 live from the front row; walking the Emmaus Road with some buddies until our ‘hearts burn within us,’, and instead of kicking the bucket i would like to ‘fly the coop’.

My wife and kids take two vacations a year—one to the snow and one to the beach. I like the mountains and Julie likes the Ocean.

I think failures are under-appreciated. One of my favorite failures is when I was a youth pastor and told our youth group that if we didnt double in size in one year I would resign. We didnt double, and I didnt resign. That’s kind of like two failures with one stone.

My personal blog is www.beloved.ws. I have a Facebook account as well.

If you really want to know what Lighthouse is all about here are a few of our stories. We are people, not buildings, we have stories not property lines, we are sharing a story not selling a book. We are on a journey, we haven’t arrived. Our ethnically diverse and inter-generational tales are woven together in a breathtaking epic. Check back from time to time and read about real people, real lives, and real hope in-the-making.

Barry

“I didn’t find this church it found me, I heard the music at Boedekker park. I was not doing well at all, I had lost my employment, my home, my relationships, clothing, and a lot of money. I was on my last leg and very ill; I had pretty much given up on life. When I arrived at the park I saw some very happy people that were not afraid to speak to me or to offer their assistance even though I was a stranger. There was no judgment, only kindness and friendship and the willingness to get involved with someone that had nothing to offer. This, is as far as I am concerned, the greatest act of charity available. LightHouse has given me a new lease on life, it has given me my family back, a sense of purpose, some new wonderful friends, and real hope. In a little over a year the Lord has given me all I lost back, restoring both my sanity, and my self respect. If you were to have looked at me a year ago and asked “where will this man be in a year” most would answer dead, on the streets homeless and addicted, or in jail. Thanks to my friends at

LightHouse and my newly restored faith, none of these dire predictions have come true.”

Barry and Savoia help with just about anything they can: cleaning and Boedekker Park. They are us..

Amanda

“The love is authentic here. Jesus seems so real, I can see him in the kindness and caring of people like Mikki and Manny. I find his hands and feet are present in the labor and love of this community.”

Amanda (left) and Angela (right) stand next to the Drip Cafe they designed at Lighthouse. Amanda and her husband, Brandon, serve as our Creatives Team Directors. Angela and Her husband, Nathan, serve as our Music Directors.

Taylor

“Lighthouse challenges me to express (and thus make real) my enjoyment of God. It’s a place to be prayed for—to be weak and full of hope. Its where different isnt wrong, where my former crowns are no longer valuable distinctions.”

Taylor (left) and Scott (right) stand at the entrance of Lighthouse. Taylor leads our Blue Bottle Beginning discussions (Sundays, 9:30AM) and his wife, Catherine manages Drip, our Blue Bottle Cafe. Scott and his wife, Anne, are Lighthouse Discipleship Pastors. Part of our story includes how this little foyer cafe and its vision express who we are. Perhaps its the way they serve people coffee in their seats. Or maybe it is the signature pastries and our passion to give back to the community. Then there is Scott, who scripts the story of us becoming disciples of Jesus: ask anyone ‘in the know’ and they will tell you we live to follow Jesus and help others do the same. It’s our passion. Scott leads people through our “Come and See” forum, a safe place to investigate the claims of Jesus and the cost of following Him.

Jasmine

I used to be an aggressive atheist. I wanted people to suffer and be miserable like me. The first time I came to the Lighthouse I came out of curiosity, harboring anger inside. The second time I just watched people’s faith. By my third visit I was enjoying the music. Through the melodic worship, I learned some words about Jesus. I came again and again and discovered the people were so peaceful and kind; and then I fell in love with Lighthouse. Shortly thereafter, (and most importantly) God found me here. He is so powerful and forgiving. He turned my aggression to peace. He let me know how I am valuable in this world. He took my burdens on His shoulders. He helped me forgive people and myself.

Emily

Lighthouse has been a symbol of grace in my life. I never could have imagined that God would take me where he has taken me. I am growing and learning. I am secure and safe. I have deep friendships at Lighthouse and real community and what’s amazing is all of this beauty and comfort in a city cold with loneliness and shallow in its superficial friendships.

“I was naked and you clothed me, hungry and you fed me.” — Jesus

On the second Saturday on the month we converge on Boedekker Park with food, clothes, prayer teams, water, and occasionally some hygiene packs. We hug the hurting, feed the hungry, pray for the desperate and love our neighbors and friends.

Want to help? Need help? Contact MHermosillo@sflighthouse.com

Boedekker Park Ministry is led by our Evangelism Pastors Manny (pictured below with big smile and Doves on his T-shirt) and Mikki Hermosillo. Manny’s story began here in the streets of San Francisco, where his life hit the bottom. Manny and Mikki are writing a new chapter to the story of their life, this chapter has grace and beauty, hope and compassion, fire and passion.

We believe the gospel can transform our lives through community. We are a church whose primary mission is to make disciples and we live on mission all week long. Worship is more than Sunday, it is every day. We desire to plant missionaries in neighborhoods who love and share the gospel. We call these Beloved Communities. This is where life is enjoyed and lived. Jesus said, “If you have love one for another, you are my followers.”
